We invest approximately $10M per year in research and initiatives that help reduce the impacts from natural hazards on people, property, and the community. Our five-year Research Strategy sets out how our investment will support our research goal through advancing research and capability development that will benefit New Zealand.

Our research portfolio delivers on our goal through:
- competitive grants - Biennial grants and University Research Programme grants
- strategic programmes (e.g. that are focused on delivering to our Risk Reduction priorities, loss modelling and national databases such as the National Seismic Hazard Model),
- capability development (e.g. Te Toi Whakaruruhau(external link), guidelines for geo-technical and engineering professionals, postgraduate grants, event/conference sponsorships),
- national/regional programmes (GeoNet, DEVORA(external link), It’s Our Fault(external link)).
We want to be an active partner in research, not just a funder. Our funded research contributes to an important evidence-base for decision-making that supports New Zealand’s resilience to natural hazards. We work with researchers to ensure their work has the greatest possible uptake across policy, practise and public education. This means establishing relationships with our researchers that go well beyond the life of a contract.
