Quantifying corrosion in volcanic ash and gas environments

This project quantified the corrosion behaviour of typical metallic building materials exposed to geothermal emission volcanic ash, and their combined effects. It aims to improve how we understand Aotearoa New Zealand’s durability in the built environment, in volcanic environments.

The study combined one-year field exposure testing in the Rotorua Geothermal Field with laboratory characterisation to assess corrosion initiation, time-dependent corrosion behaviour, and material-specific responses.
