Incentivising Resilience
Natural Hazards Commission Toka Tū Ake’s mandated risk reduction function empowers us to facilitate methods of reducing and preventing natural hazard damage. To do this, we use our risk information evidence base to target risk reduction actions.
Investing in risk reduction and building resilience is one of the most efficient and effective ways to reduce the impact of natural hazard risks on New Zealanders.
We are therefore scoping New Zealand’s first risk reduction fund for natural hazards. The fund would look to investigate the potential to provide financial incentives for people to take high impact risk reducing actions, such as removing brick chimneys and fixing homes to foundations. As well as helping homeowners provide more secure homes for their whānau, these actions will reduce insurance claims after natural hazard events.
